Formats

  • CD-DA: (Compact Disc Digital Audio). Audio compact disc, up to 74 minutes of audio, defined by Philips' "Red Book".
  • CD-ROM: Defined in Philips' "Yellow Book". Single recording session. Can be Mode 1 or Mode 2. It is recommended to use Mode 1 with ISO9660 format. CD-ROM Multisession: Defined in the "Orange Book", has several sessions, basically used for CD-Rs. Not recommended for CD replicas. Due to misinterpretations of the "Orange Book" when the standard was defined, some multisession CD-ROM readers cannot read this format. If you want to make a multisession CD, the CD-ROM/XA format is recommended.
  • CD-ROM/XA: (Compact Disc Read Only Memory/extended Architecture). An extension of the "Yellow Book". Defines the ISO9660 format.
  • CD-I: Interactive compact disc, defined in the "Green Book".
  • CD-Extra: Defined in the "Blue Book" consists of a session with one or more audio tracks and another session with a data track in CD-ROM/XA format.
